Stats for Oct. 2006 Week 2

This will be the last for a little while.

I've taken a chance with usability in the fact that I've elected to change the site navigation bar on the home page from pure HTML to FLASH. There's a possibility that if your machine or browser is locked down real tight that you might become stranded on the home page. Actually, I don't think most visitors realize that there is a whole site accessible here, even from this page. If the box labeled 'Navigation' pops open all your warning bells & whistles, just use the site links below it. There's nothing here on the site that's going to 'get you' !! Google & Blogger pull sites like that everyday, & I get reviews from them quite often.

While I don't mind the monthly bit from Blogger about my 'cloud tags' on my pictures page, every once in a while I'll get the questionnaire in my email regarding a 'reported flagging'. Its just a part of business on the net. But it does prove that I'm not a Trojan filled zombie that's out to get you PC !!

Things are a little busy for me now, I'll be concentrating on the 'real business' at hand & shooting a bit of video. I haven't given up on the April project, but I'm getting bored with it. I want it to look good & I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to what I've done with it.

Anyway, here's the stats for this week.

Stats for Sept. 2006 Week 4

Well, its been a busy week for me.

I've updated the slideshow on the picture blog for the month. Be sure to click through the pop-up on the 'KOREA' frame. This will take you to Flickr where you'll be able to see a lot more information about the photos. If you pick a lucky picture, you'll get the option to see notations I placed inside the photos. You might have to update your Macromedia/Adobe and allow the ActiveX if your PC is all bottled up. If you don't, your missing out on a really neat feature on the Flickr Page.

Here's the instructions (IE6 only) on how to open the permission & how to close it up again:

1. Go to 'Tools' then 'Manage Add-ons...' in the browser menu.
2. Select 'Add-ons currently loaded' or 'Add-ons that have requested' in the pop-down menu.
3. Look for "Shockwave Flash Object - Adobe Systems Incorporated - ActiveX Control - Flash9.ocx", click on its icon at the far left in the list & enable it by clicking the 'ENABLE' radio button near the bottom left of the GUI box.
4. At this point it is a good security measure to go ahead and click the "Update ActiveX" update button on the bottom far right of the box.
5. Select 'OK' and enjoy the extras that I've labored for 3 days to insert into the pictures.
6. When your done & while your still at Flickr, pull down the 'Manage' box & highlight the icon left of 'Shockwave Flash Object' & select the 'DISABLE' radio button. The Update button should dim out. Then press OK.
7. CLOSE your browser down !!

It's Just That Simple !!

What you are doing is allowing the page code to flash-up some 'boxes' that are on top of the photo. You have to be on a photo's premiere page for this. When you move the cursor over these boxes, a comment that I wrote about a particular area in the photo will display in a cream colored tag. You'll be able to give direction to anywhere in Yongsan-Gu, name the surrounding neighborhoods, impress your Korean expat friends for Chusok (Korean holiday this week) with your knowledge of the area, without ever stepping in Korea. Just tell them you surf the internet a lot !!

Most people who look at the slideshow at Dave's Pictures don't know they can stop the show & read part of the main caption for that picture. If you click the link inside the slideshow frame, that takes you to Flickr. Hey, I'm spending a whole 7 cents a day to be able to do this, so go ahead and give it a try.

There's no spyware or viruses, or anything else that's going to get your system while your looking at the pictures. Just disable the ActiveX before you leave my site pages.

And now, a little about the site stats for this week...

From Sept. 28 to Oct. 4 there were 13 visitors total, 9 visited the Home Page & NeoWorx continues to be the biggest referrer. 3 of the hits were here on this page & 1 hit on the Dave's News was from Mount Berry, Georgia USA. It looks like a college town near Rome.

The majority of visitors were from Europe this week with one new visitor from China.

While a proxy does add SOME privacy to your browsing, it can make you stand out too. There were 2 separate proxy hits this week.

• PROXY #1 was using IE7 or equivalent (FireFox) with Windows XP & odds are that they visited the Home Page.
• PROXY #2 was using IE6 with Windows XP & visited this page.

Remember: everytime you call up a page on the internet, your PC handshakes with the server so it can send the correct display for your system. This happens everytime you click to a site. This is not spyware, its simple server side stats. I then selectively call up the results for all the hits on the site. By cross comparison, I can infer certain specifics from the data. Besides, anyone can see where the hits are coming from as I have included hit maps that self update on some of the pages.

Why ??: I am striving to create an environment within a personal site where users have an input to the site author (me). Things like stats, features, gimmicks like the slideshow, things that create interest, even this forum cover sheet are methods to meet the goal of a Dynamic Interactive Site.
